Boletus aerus Bull.

Fruit body: cap up to 20 cm, fleshy, rounded then expanded, velvety, in shades of umber to almost black. Tubes and pores remain white for long, later yellow. Stem is up to 12x8 cm, at first swollen at the middle, later cylindrical, in shades of ochraceos, covered with whitish reticulum.

Microscopy: spores subfusiform, 12-16.5x4-5.5 μm, yellowish individually, dark brown-olive en masse.

Flesh: hard, whitish, unchanging, mild smell and pleasant taste.

Habitat: in warm deciduous woods.

Edibility: edible, priced, commercially exploited.
