CEP, KING BOLETE

Fruit body: cap up to 20 cm, but sometimes up to 30 cm, fleshy, rounded then expanded, slightly wrinkled, smooth to velvety, in shades of ochraceous and brown, brighter margins. Tubes are whitish, then bright yellow and at the end olive, tiny pores, whitish then yellowish, at the end olive. Stem is up to 20x12 cm, at first swollen at base, later elongated, club-shape or cylindrical, brighter than cap, covered with whitish reticulum in upper part.

Microscopy: spores subfusiform, 13-17.5x4-5.5 μm, greenish-yellow individually, brown-olive en masse.

Flesh: white, hard, unchanging, mild smell, taste reminiscent of young walnuts.

Habitat: in woods, on mild acidic terrains.

Edibility: edible, priced, very aromatic when dried, commercially exploited.
