Geastrum melanocephalum (Czern.) V.J. Staněk

Fruit body: onion shape, diameter up to 7 cm, exoperidium splits into 7-10 rays thus becoming star-shape, diameter up to 18 cm. Gleba is globose, up to 5 cm, naked (endoperidium almost non existant), cottony, turns to brown-black dust of spores

Microscopy: spores globose, warted, 3.5—4.5 μm, brown-black en masse.

Habitat: thermophile and ruderal; growing in open areas and grasslands. Very rare.

Edibility: inedible.

Comment: This species differs from other in Geastrum genus in that its gleba is not protected with endoperidium after “opening”. Nevertheless, it emits spores for long periods.
