Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers.

(= Dryodon e.)

Fruit body: up to 20 cm wide and 15 cm high, made of densely arranged spines emerging from common base; upper surface is tangled and fibrous. Spines are up to 0.3 cm thick at base and 3.5 cm long, cream.

Microscopy: spores ovoid, smooth, amyloid, slightly warted, 5-6x4-5 µm

Flesh: whitish, soft, brown when dried, mild smell and sweetish taste.

Habitat: on live and deadwood of deciduous trees.

Edibility: edible when young. This species is cultivated in the Far East.
