Lactarius deterrimus Gröger

FALSE SAFFRON MILKCAP

Fruit body: cap up to 12 cm, expanded with depressed centre, slightly slimy, faintly zonate, orange, quickly turning green, margin at first involute. Gills are crowded, apricot or saffron, at base reddish, turning green when bruised. Stem is up to 8x2.5 cm, not ornamented with pits, colour as cap, turning green with time, visible white zone under gills.

Microscopy: spores broadly ellipsoid, ornamented with isolated ridges, 7-10x6.5-7.5 μm.

Flesh: yellow-orange, first turning red then green when cut, smell and somewhat bitter taste reminiscent of carrot. Milk is orange, at first sweetish then somewhat bitter, smell like carrot.

Habitat: season summer to autumn, under spruce (Picea). Common.

Edibility: edible
