Tuber macrosporum Vittad.

Fruit body: globose, up to 6 cm in diameter. Peridium is broken into black and brown flattened surfaces. Gleba is at first whitish, then in more darker reddish-umber to almost black hues, densely marbled with twisted white veins, mild taste, smell distinct dominated by aroma of garlic.

Microscopy: spores very large, ellipsoid, reticulately ornamented, 45-75x30-60 µm, brown. Asci globose, on a short stem, with 1-3(4) spores.

Habitat: season from autumn to winter under deciduous trees, mostly under Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur) and White Poplar (Populus alba), altitude up to 300 m, always buried.

Edibility: edible aromatic fungus
